Year  2000

Face Detection Technologies

Early 2000, Japan camera manufacturers were looking for Face detection technologies to integrate into their digital camera products. However, the processing power to run Face recognition in a tiny hardware was not enough to do face recognition.

Companies developed some Face engines by using pattern matching techniques. Omron developed smile detector and Sony commercialized it by Smile shutter on the digital cameras. Panasonic developed an engine with many restrictions like grey background, indoor environments, NEC developed a slow engine to analyze gender and ages of people. 

US universities developed some algorithms, many papers had been published. However, embedded platforms have been essential to use the FR technology. 

Ayonix developed some technologies and provided to Japan companies.


Year  2007 – 2013

Research on 3D Face

Recognition Development of 3D technologies and artificial intelligence techniques.

After few years of research and prototype developments, we officially established our company in 2007. Giant Japan manufacturing companies had been our valuable customers. After a few successful runs on embedded devices of Sharp, Sanyo, Panasonic, Sony, Toyota, we started to market our technology to governments and law enforcement departments. First country we deployed the system was Russia in abroad.


Year  2014

Embedded Devices and NIST Test Participation

AI technologies became dominant technology for Face recognition. We changed our networks to Deep learning techniques and used wherever was possible. We worked on three fundamental items:

Deep FR Engine for Embedded Devices

While we developed the FR engine, we realized that deep learning techniques were amazing but very slow. We started to do optimizations for embedded area and developing our own framework instead of using tensorflow and other deep learning frameworks.

NIST Tests

NIST(National institute of Standard and technologies) in USA is a national test organization in USA. We submitted our engine for 2014 tests and we became the second fastest company among 15 submitted FR engines. Thereafter, we continuously worked on new NIST tests (NIST FIVE 2015, NIST 2018)

Complete Application

We worked on developing a complete, full application. However, the application support was tough and it was expensive for the customer to deploy a Face recognition system because we were processing in the central server. To ride this out we started to use edge computing. After five years of development, we achieved an edge-computing face recognition system and its management utilities and all necessary tools (AICAM).


Year  2020

Corona Virus Started

Face mask was essential. Everyone started to put masks on their faces and that changed the path of Face recognition. We started to develop face mask detection and face recognition on Masked faces. We developed night vision face recognition technologies as well.

Year  2022

Post-covid Recovery

Industry has started to recover after a long rest. Ayonix started to promote its Edge-based Access control and Surveillance applications for Retail market. Our target is to install our Face recognition Access control&Time Attendance application to as many locations as possible. Ayonix increased licenses to 1200 locations in FY22 and we are planning to increase 10 times more in FY23.
